It's that time of year again - holiday card season! I, for one, am a huge fan of holiday cards. I mean, what's not to love? You're getting fun mail in your mailbox every day for weeks - something other than catalogs, bills and junk mail, you get to catch up with family and friends (even if it's just at this one time a year), it's a dash of daily holiday cheer delivered to your doorstep, or at least your mail collection spot. I also love the holiday card update letters. I get extra excited when I open a card and a folded-up piece of paper falls out. I love reading everyone's news, I love pictures of families or kids or pets. I *am* a Christmas nut, after all, and this is one of my favorite parts of the season.
I realize, however, that not everyone adores the holiday update letters as much as I love them. Hubby, for example, isn't as much of a fan. He put the kibosh on our own update letter several years ago and has lobbied against its reinstatement successfully every year since. So, I'm curious - which one of us is in the minority, him or me? I've put a poll over yonder in the sidebar, feel free to voice your opinion on the subject there or in the comments or both!

There is really only one holiday letter that I like and that's from my mom's best friend....She always finds humor in even the not so great of times (like the year she was getting a divorce)...the rest of them...not so much.
Sometimes that's the only contact I have with people, so I like to read them.

I do a quick update... not very in-depth, but it's something. I like to keep it to half-a-page. I also always include a picture. This year, instead of making my whole family post for 50 photos in the hopes that one turns out good, I did a photo collage print from Walgreens.com. It worked out great! The prints were 29 cents each, plus I had a coupon for 10 free prints. You should check it out! You can include lots of photos of lots of different people (and pets!)
I'm a fan if they are not dripping with "we did this and we did that and how cool are we" attitude. I mean get a blog already people!
I love a sincere update letter from people I care about - college roommates, beloved cousins, you - totally awesome.
My egotistical, braggart of a cousin? Nope. Save the postage. Because I seriously want to drive across country and shove the letter down his throat every year when I receive it.

I'm not a big fan - it seems the only ones I have ever gotten are the "braggy" ones. Maybe if I got something different I would change my mind.
My philosophy on update letters -- Send them! Put the bare-bones highlights in bold. Readers can then choose -- read in detail, skim the bold text, or just check out the pictures and toss the giant page of text. But why deprive ALL your friends and family of an update letter 'cuz SOME won't want to read it?
If they aren't all braggy, I love them... it's a great way to catch up....
